The crushing wheel is to be seen just across the lane and just yards from Odin mine, on the outskirts of Castleton in the Derbyshire Peak District National Park.

Its iron tyre and circular iron track were erected in about 1823 although it is possible that the mine was opened by the Romans in their quest for lead. The name makes one believe that the Anglo Saxons could have worked the mine, but it was definitely worked in the 17th and 18th Centuries.

Ores were brought from some miles away to be crushed and washed as well as what was processed from Odin Mine itself. The crusher ran on a circular iron track and consisted of a gritstone wheel with a square hole at its centre. The wheel is shod with an iron tyre which was held in place by wooden wedges, and a wooden shaft passed through the centre hole. The crushing stone would have been linked to a pivot post in the centre of the circle by the wooden axle – part of which survives, and pulled around the track by a horse to crush ore spread on it.
